Gluten: A Sticky Subject

A “sticky subject”? Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together. Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and triticale.
Unfortunately, some people suffer from a variety of ailments that are linked to gluten including symptoms like diarrhea, stomach upset, abdominal pain, and bloating… not our favorite subjects when talking about food! If you’re experiencing symptoms like these, medical experts strongly urge you to consult your physician and we certainly agree! It is important to note that there is a significant difference between Celiac Disease (a disease that affects the absorbing of nutrients due to gluten) and gluten intolerance (where the body reacts poorly to the ingestion of gluten). Either way, before changing to a gluten-free diet, seek the advice of your doctor!
The good news: If you do find you have a gluten intolerance, the Rio can help! Our newest menu includes a number of options that are gluten-free and taste amazing. Come give them a try!
