Terroir is a fancy word we sometimes hear when talking about wine. Yes, you too can sound like you know what you’re talking about if you say it with your best French accent! Take geography, geology, and climate; combine it with a plant’s genetics and you have terroir.
Why does it matter? Because the environment that grapes are grown dramatically affects the final product. Elevation, temperature ranges, amount of sunlight, wind, soil drainage and composition all help to determine the grapes that are produced and the wines that come from them.
Go ahead: Say it with a good French accent: Terroir.
